Rafael Saraiva is a former student of the studio Complex Cities. He graduated with the project “Knowledge Backbone for Rio de Janeiro”, supervised by Akkelies van Nes, Thorsten Schuze and Roberto Rocco. The project envisaged new connections between the city centre and the airport and the redevelopment of urban voids along the coast, including key interventions such as the area of the federal University of Rio de Janeiro, the old port and the new rapid train terminal.

After his graduation at Bouwkunde, Rafael went back to Brazil and presented his findings to developers acting in the areas of intervention. Not surprisingly, developers were keen to listen to Rafael, and some of his ideas have been incorporated in their projects. He is now working as a consultant for those developers, and hopes that some of his ideas will be implemented. Please, check Rafael’s presentation at
